In this review, I am going to cover 10 of the best handheld GPS units and I think that it is fair to say that Garmin has really made a mark in the GPS industry.
I am going to cover the screen sizes, downloadable maps, the cost, screen sizes, sharing of information, GPS units that can take photos, weather forecasting, emergency calling and even dog tracking devices that will prove to be useful.
If you are new to GPS units in general, then it might also be a good idea to read the buying guide displayed below:
How to Choose the Right Garmin Handheld GPS
I think that we can both agree that Garmin is the best brand when it comes to a GPS.
Below, I will give you some guidelines on how to choose the right Garmin GPS for you that you can also use while hunting.
1. How much do these devices cost?
The cost will be determined by the size of the screen and also the features available. The least expensive item in this listing will cost you less than $100 while the most expensive item will cost just under $1000.
If you are short on a budget or you just do not want to spend that much on a handheld GPS, then I would recommend the Garmin eTrex 10 as it is also the least expensive.
On average you can expect to pay from $200 up to $500 for a decent GPS that can be used for hunting.
2. What are the available screen sizes?
The GPS with the smallest screen size (2.2 inches) must be the Garmin eTrex 10 and also the Garmin eTrex 30 which is the upgraded and colored version of the eTrex 10.
If you have large hands or maybe your eyesight is not as good as it used to be and you would like to have a GPS that has a larger screen size (4 inches), then I would recommend the Garmin Montana 610 Camo which has the largest screen size
3. Some units are also rechargeable with a long battery life
The average battery of the units in this article is from 16 to 20 hours. If you prefer to have a GPS that has a very long battery life (75 hours) that can also be recharged, then I would highly recommend the Garmin Inreach Explorer+ which also has an SOS system in case of an emergency.
4. Some devices can wirelessly share information
Almost all of the devices in this listing can share information such as position, images and also waypoints with other devices that are Bluetooth compatible.
There is also a GPS that can connect to your smartphone in order to share information and also to receive messages and emails.
The GPS that I refer to is the Garmin GPSMAP 64SC which is not a bad choice either.
5. Some GPS units can take photos
There are currently 4 GPS units in this review that can take pictures. They all have a built-in 8-megapixel camera that can also geotarget each image to the location in which it was taken for reference later on.
Below I will reveal all 4 units that have a built-in camera:
1. Garmin Montana 680t (4-inch screen)
2. Garmin Oregon 650 (3-inch Screen)
3. Garmin GPSMAP 64SC (2.6-inch Screen)
4. Garmin Rino 755t (3-inch Screen)
I would personally recommend the 4-inch screen as it has better visuals for taking photos.
6. Some have a compass and can measure air pressure with altitude
Most of the GPS units in this review will have a built-in compass that will help with the direction and also a barometer for tracking the air pressure and an altitude meter for determining the altitude.
7. Weather forecasting with a flashlight can also be included
If forecasting the weather is important to you, then I would highly recommend the Garmin Rino 755t which can also take photos and has a built-in flashlight.
8. Some can call for aid when there is an emergency
The best GPS for this is going to be the Garmin Inreach Explorer+ which has a built-in SOS system that can be used to notify the GEOS services that will respond to your need 24/7.
This unit will have an SOS button on the right that once activated will trigger a search response.
9. You can even track your dogs
If you like to take your dogs with you while hunting, then you will love the Garmin Alpha 100 TT that can be used to track your dogs.
This specific unit also comes with 1 trackable dog collar and can track up to 20 dogs at a time. It has a lot of other features as well.

Hello,
I am not a hunter but I am a hiker. My favorite Garmin was the Garmin Montana 680t (Best for Taking Photos). I liked the larger screen which makes it easier to see. I also liked that it takes pictures so that I don’t have to hold my phone as well. I also didn’t mind that it didn’t have the compass as I wouldn’t really use it anyway.
Great page!
