Some of you might not have the time go through this whole and lengthy article so I think that it is best that I reveal to you the best tactical vest which is the UTG 547 vest. This vest also has the best value for the money.
There is this common misconception that all tactical vests are the same. This is a problem because the variety is HUGE and if you do not know where and how to spot the finer details, then you might end up buying a vest that simply will not deliver.
Want to know a secret?
There is actually only 10 vests that are good enough that I have selected in this article. So if you seriously do NOT want to waste your hard earned money or if you want to avoid the experience of returning the vest to the supplier, then you must read this article.
Our Best 5 Tactical Vests Revealed
- UTG 547 (Top Pick)
- Ultimate Arms Gear (Least Expensive)
- Condor (Best For Rifle Magazines)
- KAS (Best for kids)
- Rothco Vest (Best for Concealment)
Let’s start with a preview of that list. In this review about the best tactical vests, I am going to go through features such as ventilation (huge factor), the variety of pouches, types of magazines it can carry, water bladders, molle systems and off course the price tag.
If you are new to tactical vests, then I would highly recommend that you go over the buying guide below.
How To Choose The Best Tactical Vest?
Most people do not even know where to begin when trying to buy a tactical vest and it is totally understandable. I must also add that the vests are some of the easiest to choose from compared to some of the other tactical gear.
If this is literally your first time buying a tactical vest and you do not have a clue where to start, then I would highly recommend you to go through this buying guide with me.
Let us start with some of the sizes:
Fit & Shoulder Straps
It is very hard to say because some of these vests might only come in one size. Luckily this is not a big problem because most of the vests will have adjustable straps.
The 2 types of straps that can be adjusted are:
- Shoulder Straps
- Side Straps
The shoulder straps can be adjusted to be longer if the vest is too tight below your shoulders which can also limit your arm movement. Sometimes the vest can also sit too high or low and the height can easily be adjusted with by adjusting the shoulder straps.
The side straps are also very useful for when the vest sits too tight around the chest or stomach area. Some people have huge upper bodies where their chest and stomach might cause a problem. When you come across a vest where you can choose a size, then I would highly recommend you get one that is one size bigger than your current size.
Price
Sometimes the cost can range from just under $30 per vest up to just under $90. The biggest factors that play a role in the price is going to be the type of material used, craftsmanship and also the number of pouches.
If you are looking for the least expensive vests that also includes pouches then I would highly recommend the Ultimate Arms Gear and also the Pellor Tactical Vest which is 2 of the least expensive options. There are also 2 other very inexpensive options which include a vest with no pouches and also a vest that is best used by children.
Colors
There are 4 main types of colors available which include Black, Light Brown (Khaki, Tan, Coyote), Green and also Camo. There can also be more colors especially when you are interested in the camo type. Colors are not that important to me but I know that it might be a deal breaker for some people.
Pouches
This is a huge factor that also plays a massive role in how much some of the vests will cost. Some of the vests might contain only 2 pouches while others can go up to 12 pouches.
There is also a large variety of uses when it comes to some of these pouches :
- Some pouches can carry rifle magazines.
- Some can carry pistol magazines.
- Can carry a radio.
- Can hold an ID card.
- Some can carry a hunting knife.
- Can carry first aid gear.
- Can also carry a flashlight.
You should also never feel limited as to what you can put in these pouches. If the pouch is designated for a radio but you would rather replace it with a chocolate bar then be my guest. Just as long as it won’t get damaged, squashed then does not fit then you can carry it inside the pouch.
Pistol Holster
Some tactical vests do have a pistol holster located on the left-hand side in which you can carry a pistol. Just make sure that you are familiar with the firearms law in your state when it comes to carrying pistols. There are only 3 vests in this review that has pistol holsters and they are the:
These are the only 3 vests that have a pistol holster.
Belt
Some of this vest will also have a belt attached to the bottom part. Most of the time these belts will have 2 smaller pouches that can be used to carry items such as folding knives etc. It is also important to keep in mind that the belt is not fixed and you can take the belt off at any time.
Absorb recoil
Some of this vest will have a shoulder strap that is also padded in order to minimize some of the pressure that comes from the weapons recoil. Having blue to purple shoulders is not a fun way to start or end your day. In this article, there are only 3 vests that come with a padded shoulder strap on the right-hand side and they include the following:
I would highly recommend one of these vests if you like to shoot with heavy powered rifles.
Breathability
Some of these vests will have mesh on the sides or back which will allow air to flow through. This will also help some of the hot air to escape in order to cool you down. Almost all of the vest will help to cool you down, but there is 1 vest in particular that will do an amazing job in cooling you down. This vest is the NcStar VISM that has Nylon PALs webbing which covers the whole front area.
Rescue drag handle
Most of the vests in this review will have some sort of drag handle located in the neck area which can be used to drag one of your downed teammates away from a specific area. Some people also like to pack their vest before wearing it and then uses this handle to carry the vest once it is fully packed.
Molle
Almost all of the vests will have a molle system on the surface of certain areas on the vest that can be used to attach other molle compatible pouches to your vest. What is a molle system?
I kinda guessed that you would be asking this question. The molle system is actually nylon straps that have been attached to the vest. They are stitched in such a way in order to form loops. Their loops can then be used to attach other items that also have nylon straps. You basically then need to weave the straps of the pouch into the loops in order to attach it to the vest.
Some of the vests come with molle but not any pouches. These types of vests are ideal for those that want to custom-build their own vest with pouches. If you would like to custom-build your own vest, then I would highly recommend the Gloryfire vest.
Carry ammunition
There are some vests that are best used to carry magazines. Some vests have a combo where they might carry 3 or 4 magazines and then use the other pouches for items other than magazines.
Then you might find vests where their sole purpose is to only carry rifle magazines. They might also have the option to add more pouches at a later stage. The one vest that I refer to is the Condor vest which has up to 6 pouches that are specifically made to carry larger rifle magazines.
Hydration system
I know of a couple of backpacks that have a hydration system but never did I know that you can actually find vests that have this as well. It is also important to note that some of these vests do not come with a water bladder. These vests will only have an extra pocket in which to put the water bladder. There are only 2 vests in this review that have a hydration system and they are the Condor and the NcStar VISM tactical vest.
Vests for children
Sometimes I like to add a product that is also suitable for kids. The vest that I had in mind for children were the KAS vest which is not ideal to carry magazines or any type of weapon.
This vest also provides excellent ventilation and is best used for costume parties or just something for your kids to wear in order to get them to play outdoors.
Concealment
The vest that I am mentioning is the Rothco Vest where the pouches will not stand out like that of some of the other vests.
Some of the pockets and pouches will be located on the inside where they will not be visible from outside view. When you look at this vest, you will also not be able to determine whether it is a tactical vest or not.
Armor plating compatible
There is also one specific vest in this article that has the ability to install armor plates. The vest I am talking about is the Gloryfire which has 3 areas in which you can install the plates. The areas will include the front, back, and also both sides.
#1 UTG 547 (Top Pick)
If you would like to have a tactical vest that has a large variety of pouches to choose from at a decent price, then I would like to introduce to you the UTG 547 tactical vest.
This best is ideal for those that want to carry from magazines to radios. This vest come in 4 colors which include the following:
- Black
- OD Green
- Army Digital
- Woodland Digital Camo
This vest is also going to be my personal favorite because it has a lot of features, looks nice and is also not that expensive
More info on the features:
- Can carry 4 rifle magazine pouches. The first set is 4 pouches (3 on the right and one on the left-hand side) that are built to carry mags for your rifle (these will be larger than the pistol mags).
- Has 2 smaller pistol magazine pouches. Just above your cross draw pistol holder, you will find 3 smaller magazine pouches which are ideal for pistols.
- Also has x1 ID pouch. On the right-hand side just above the magazine pouches, you will find an enclosed pouch that can be used to keep your identification document.
- Includes x1 radio pouch. The pouch that is also closest to your left shoulder will also be a smaller pouch dedicated to your radio.
- Has x1 cross-draw pistol holster. You will also have a cross draw pistol holder that will be located on the left-hand side.
- Includes a belt. There will also be a belt included that will carry 2 smaller pouches which will be ideal for folding knives.
- Has a space for 6 shotgun shells. Also on the flap of the ID pouch, you will have a small strip where you can hold up to 6 shotgun shells.
- Right shoulder strap ideal for shooting with rifles. The shoulder strap on the right-hand side will also be thicker to lessen the impact when shooting with a high caliber rifle.
- Works great to cool you down. Because the back is the area where a person sweats the most, they came up with a mesh ventilation system to cool down.
- Has a rescue drag handle. Just below the neck, you will also find a rescue drag handle which you can use to drag an injured teammate out of danger.
- Has molle on the back. The back area is also covered with some sort of molle system to which you can attach additional gear, tools or pouches.
- Adjustable size. Another nice thing to mention is that you will find adjustable straps on the sides. This will enable you to adjust the size of the vest so that it can fit most people.
You might notice that the 12 features above might be a bit overwhelming, so I have created a short summary below of what you will get.
Summary:
- x4 Rifle mag pouches.
- x1 Cross-draw pistol holder.
- x2 Smaller pistol magazine pouches.
- x1 ID Pouch.
- x6 Shotgun shells strip.
- x1 Radio pouch.
The vest will also have a high quality zipper in the middle to quickly open or close the vest. As you can see, this is a great vest to have. This vest also has a total of 8 pouches that can be used to carry some of your gear.
What we liked
- Good quality.
- Multiple colors to choose from.
- Good ventilation.

#2 Ultimate Arms Gear – Least Expensive
IF the UTG 547 was too expensive for your taste and you would like to have a tactical vest that is very similar to the UTG but also less expensive then I would recommend the Ultimate Arms Gear tactical vest to you.
As a matter of fact, this vest is also the least expensive option in this review when it comes to adult tactical vests. It comes with some of the features that the UTG 547 has. It does not come in many colors and would go as far as to say that it only comes in the color black.
Summary of what you will get:
This is just a very short summary of what you can expect to get from this vest.
- x2 Rifle mag pouches.
- x2 Pistol mag pouches.
- x1 Radio pouch.
- x1 Hunting knife pouch.
- x1 Pouch for ID.
- x4 Shotgun shells loop strip.
Some of the most important features:
- Total of 4 pouches for magazines. You will find 2 rifle magazine pouches near the bottom of the vest and also 2 smaller pistol magazine pouches on the left side near the chest area.
- Comes with a pistol holster. It also has a pistol holster just above the right-hand side hip area. What makes this nice is that you do not need to carry a belt in which to carry any type of holster.
- Can also carry a radio. You will also get a radio pouch on the left-hand side shoulder strap. This will give you easy access to the radio as well.
- Can carry a hunting knife. On the right-hand side just above the hip, there is also a pouch that is fit for a larger hunting knife.
- Capable of carrying an ID card. On the right-hand side neat the chest area, you will also find a pouch that can be used for your ID.
- Has a space for 4 shotgun shells. On the flap of that pouch, you will also find a strap with 4 loops that are used to keep 4 shotgun shells.
In the middle of the vest chest area, you will find a high-quality zipper used to quickly put on or take off the vest.
The only unnecessary accessory that it has was the 5 strap loops on the right-hand shoulder strap where you can put rifle bullets. They could have rather reinforced the right shoulder strap to lessen some of the impacts from high caliber rifles.
What we liked
- Moderate to good quality.
- Large variety of pouches.
- High quality zipper.
What We Didn’t Like
- Not very good ventilation.
- Right shoulder strap not “rifle friendly”.

#3 Barska VX-200
If you are serious about wearing one of the best tactical vests that you can find then I would highly recommend the tactical vest from Barska.
This vest is more or less in the same price category as the UTG and also with very similar qualities. This vest is also the best second choice compared to the UTG as well.
It comes in only 3 colors and the ones that are available are the colors Black, Green, and Tan. There are also 3 straps on each side made in such a way so that you can adjust the size of the vest to fit almost any type of person.
With that said let us get started on a short summary of what you can expect to find on this vest.
Summary of what you can find:
- x4 Rifle mag pouches.
- x1 Cross-draw pistol holder.
- x2 Smaller pistol magazine pouches.
- x1 ID Pouch.
- x6 Shotgun shells strip.

- Also able to fit a pistol holster. Just below the pistol mag pouches, you will find the detachable right handed draw holster that is used to carry your pistol. Right next to the holster you will find another pouch that can be either used to keep another magazine or to keep your knife (that is if the knife is short enough to fit).
- Also comes with a belt. You will also get a detachable heavy duty belt that has 2 extra smaller pouches. You can fit almost any type of item in one of the pouches if it is small enough.

- Can also carry shotgun shells. On the flap of that pouch, you will also find a strap that has 6 loops for where you can put 6 shotgun shells.
- This vest is also rifle friendly. The right shoulder strap is also wider and thicker to help absorb most of the impact that originates from the backward force of the rifle.
- Helps to cool you down. You will notice that the back of the vest is made out of a mesh-like material that helps with ventilation which will help some of the hot air to escape.
- Can also carry more pouches. There are also molle like straps at the back for if you want to attach more pouches, equipment or any other item.
This vest is a great alternative for the UTG and is also in the same price range. It was also a very hard choice to make between the UTG and the Barska when it came to choosing the best option.

#5 KAS (Best for kids)
I think it is fair to say that we should not forget to introduce children to tactical gear (where it is safe at least). The thing about the KAS vest is that it is not really suited for pistols and rifles as the previously mentioned vests.
But if your kids like to play paintball or attend costume parties or any other hobby that requires tactical gear, then this vest is for them. It also only comes in one style/color. Technically, this vest is also the least expensive vest in this review but is not really suitable for adults.
More info on the features:
- Has about 9 pouches. It has about 9 pouches situated on the front side of the vest. These pouches will vary in size and orientation as well.
- Can be easily zipped open. It also has a high-quality zipper in the middle of the vest. This will enable you to quickly undress this vest.
- Offers great ventilation. The vest also contains mesh material which covers the larger majority of the vest. This can drastically affect the ventilation which will lead to a cooler experience.
Because of the adjustable straps, this vest will be useful for children from 6 to 13 years. This vest has the looks and also the desired basic requirements needed for a safe and fun experience.
What we liked

As you can see, this vest is not as revealing as some of the other vests. It has some basic pockets and pouches that can be used for tactical gear.

#7 GLORYFIRE
If you are already familiar with tactical vests and you would like to “build up” your own from scratch, then you might want to consider the vest from Gloryfire.
Some people do not want to buy a vest that is already complete but instead wants to build their own vest. This is where the Gloryfire is so useful because now you can attach your own pouches almost anywhere you like. As long as there are molle and velcro available on the surface that you want to use, then you can start to build up your vest.
This vest also comes in 2 colors which is Black and Tan. This vest is best used for sizes Medium to Large. This vest is also in the same price range as the Barska and the UTG.

#8 Solomone Cavalli
If you would like to have a vest that is right in the middle when it comes to the number of pouches that are located on the surface of the vest, then you might want to look at the Solomone Cavalli.
This vest does have several pouches (will discuss them more in depth in the next section), but not as many as some of the other vests. This is ideal for if you want a vest that has a much cleaner and simpler look than most of the other.
This vest also comes in Black. This vest is also very inexpensive and is in the same price range as the Ultimate Arms Gear vest.
More info on the features:
- Made out of durable material. This vest is mainly made out of Nylon which is a very durable material which will not tear easily. This material also does not suck up as much water as other types of materials.
- Has 1 triple magazine pouch. You basically get a 3-in-1 pouch combo which will basically be used to carry magazines. This is very useful for when you want to carry extra ammo.
- Contains 1 medic pouch. Just next to the magazine pouches, you will find one larger pouch that can also be zipped open. This pouch is mainly used to carry first aid supplies.

- Has molle on both sides. You will also find molle on both the front and back sides as well. A molle system is used to attach molle compatible pouches or items.
This vest has some great features that will not overwhelm the person that is carrying it. This vest is also ideal for people that participate in sports such as airsoft.
What we liked
- Good quality.
- Can be “upgraded” with more pouches.

#9 NcStar VISM
If you live in a very hot and humid area and you would like to have a simple tactical vest that will provide the best ventilation possible, then I would highly recommend the NcStar VISM vest.
This vest also does not have any pouches but does provide a framework for if you want to add pouches at a later stage. This is especially useful for if you want to create your own custom vest.
This vest also comes in 5 colors which include Black, Green, Camo, Tan and Urban Grey. This vest is also very inexpensive and is also in the same price class as the Ultimate Arms Gear and Solomone Cavalli.
More info on the features:
- Offers superior ventilation. The whole front area of this vest is covered with Nylon PALs webbing which also provides ventilation in order to cool down. This vest also provides the best ventilation and wins all the other vests.
- Can be easily taken off. This vest has 3 buckles located in the middle near the front area. All you need to in order to take this vest off is to press all of the buckles and then you can take it off as you would take off a jacket. Do not forget to open the belt as well.
- A belt is also included. You will also get a belt that is attached to this vest. The main purpose of this belt is to carry a holster and pouches that are made to carry pistol magazines.
- Has 2 pouches for pistol mags. As mentioned above, you will also find 2 smaller pouches on each side which are attached to the belt. These pouches are specifically made to carry pistol magazines.
- Can carry a water bladder. You will also have a compartment at the back which can carry a water bladder (bladder not included). This is ideal for if you do not want to carry water bottles with you everywhere you go.
- Adjustable shoulder and side straps. This will allow you to tighten or either loosen your vest in order to fit you perfectly. This also allows this vest to be a one size fits all kind of vest.
- Can attach additional pouches. This vest is also capable of carrying more pouches. This is where the molle system comes into play. You will find molle straps that are located at both the front and back area. Now you can attach molle compatible pouches to this molle to “upgrade” your vest.
This is a very simple vest that provides very good ventilation. You will also notice that you can add more pouches at a later stage. The only problem that I had was that you cannot add too many pouches or carry too heavy gear in these pouches as the webbing system is not as strong.
What we liked
- Provides very good ventilation.
- Can add pouches at a later stage.
- Has a built in hydration system.
What We Didn’t Like
- Webbing system cannot carry that much weight.

Final word
So there you have it.
In this article, I have covered the most important factors that you need to consider before buying a tactical vest. These might include the actual value of the vest, variety of pouches, the types of magazines that it can carry, ventilation etc.
If you still could not decide which vest is for you, then I would highly suggest the UTG 547 because the price is relatively low for what you are getting compared to the Barska VX-200 which has almost all of the desirable features and was also the most expensive.
I would really appreciate it if you can leave me a comment below telling me which one was your favorite. If I also missed a vest that you thought was too important for me to miss, then please mention it in the comment section and I would gladly expand my review. With concealed carry on the rise, I love the vest that is recommended for concealment. I myself have tried to conceal a firearm without the aid of a vest and even the best waist holsters tend to show you gun when bending or scooping. The ability to carry extra ammunition is also a must and for my hunter friends, the models padding make the comparison chart a blessing. Will definitely recommend this post to others.

Hey Viljoen,
I knew there were a lot of selections for vest; just not as many that you have written about here.
The ones that have the ability to use the conceal weapons well, would be the most highly sought after. That and most likely one that allows you to carry a lot of extra ammunition, but has that ammunition easily access.
Each vest description has more than enough information to make a good decision on which vest is best for the individual that is searching for one.

UTG 547 seems really cool. I like that it can carry 4 rifle magazine pouches. I am actually just a newbie and I wonder is it the right choice for me? Or should I look for something lighter? You also said that it is a bit tight. I have a muscular body and would this be a problem?
