Most people will agree with me when I say that it can sometimes be hard to find a tactical flashlight that lives up its name.
Have you ever went on Amazon searching for flashlights and found over 50 pages of flashlights to choose from which made it hard to choose the right one?
Some can range from $5 up to even more than $100, which makes you wonder even more. Today, you will find the best flashlight in each lumen category that I created. All of them will be of high quality, durable as they should be and also some extra features.
What is also very important is that if you need a flashlight with at least 100 lumens to temporarily blind someone and all of the flashlights in this article are more than 140 lumens. With enough lumens, you can turn your flashlight into a weapon for self-defense that you give enough time to escape the attacker.
In this article, I will review 13 of the best flashlight ranging from 140 to 10 000 in lumen power. I will document their weight, length and also the type of batteries they require. Whether you want a flashlight for hunting, self-defense or one that can fit in your handbag, this review is for you.
Tactical Flashlight Buying Guide For Self-Defense
Before you delve into all of the tactical flashlights that I have listed below, you might want to read this buying guide, so that you can see the products from the same perspectives as me.
You might not agree on every point that I make, but I think that it is important that you know what you want and what to look for.
This guide will show you what you might find in some of the flashlights. If you have gone through all 10 point covered in this article, then you will have a much better idea of what to look for.
1. Lumens does matter
Lumens can in simple terms be described as a measure of the total amount of visible light from any type of visible light source. The higher the lumen, the brighter will the light source appear.
Higher lumen flashlights usually cost a little bit more and can be hard on the batteries as well. The minimum amount of lumens that you need in order to blind someone is 140 lumens. These type of flashlights can be very useful in stopping an attacker in its tracks.
This will give you enough time to get away from the danger zone as well. For hunting purposes, you would like to have a flashlight that has as many lumens as possible. You also want to be able to zoom the light as far as possible.
In this article, I will cover flashlights that range from 140 lumens up to 10 000 which is a gigantic jump if you ask me. It might also be helpful to consider buying rechargeable batteries and a corresponding charger especially for those that have a high lumen capacity.
2. Size and weight of the flashlight
The size can play a very important role especially if you are a woman that needs to carry a flashlight in your handbag. It can also be helpful if your flashlight is as light as possible if you have to carry it all day.
Some flashlight will be small enough and also contains a belt clip to where you can attach it to your belt. Some will be quite a handful and it will be best to keep them in your car.
3. Type of batteries
If you want to go for a 1200 lumen flashlight, then I would recommend getting rechargeable batteries as well. This is simply because a higher lumen flashlight will use more power and if you are planning to use your flashlight every day then your cost for batteries will go through the roof.
Fortunately, some flashlights come with batteries and a charger that makes this option an easier choice. The flashlight that I refer to is the SOLARAY PRO ZX-1.
4. Color of the flashlight
Flashlights also come in different colors, but my favorite color is going to be black. This also depends on what you are going to use the flashlight for and if the color is an important feature that you want.
In this review, the J5 Tactical V1-PRO has some amazing colors to consider. If you like to wear camo type clothes and would like to have a flashlight that will fit in with your outfit, then you are in luck.
5. Cost
All the flashlights in this review, the cost will range from $5 up to just under $95. All of the flashlights that I have reviewed are of good quality, but I if you seriously want to have a flashlight that will last a lifetime, then I would recommend going for the SOLARAY PRO ZX which is my favorite pick for the day.
6. Waterproof
This is a very important thing to consider especially when you look for a tactical flashlight. You do not want to sit with a flashlight that does not want to work anymore when it was exposed to a little rainwater or from a splash.
Some of the flashlights in this article can even be dropped 2 meters underwater without having to worry about it going dead.
However, I would not recommend you to “test” your flashlight by throwing it into the swimming pool, but instead have a peace of mind when you accidentally dropped your new gadget into the toilet.
7. Multiple modes of use
More than 90% of the flashlights in this review will have at least 3 modes which will include Low, High, and Strobe while other will have the standard of 5 modes which will include Low, Medium, High, Strobe, and SOS.
Low, Medium and High are simply referred to brightness adjustments. For instance, High will be much brighter than Medium or Low.
This is especially useful for when you want to have more visible light in a dark alley or you want to save some battery power at the end phase of your camping trip.
Strobe and SOS will also make the flashlight go on and of at a set interval. This setting is mainly used to signal for help when you want to warn or call someone from a far distance. Basically, this is like a distress signal.
8. Strong shell
Almost all of the flashlights will have an Aluminum alloy shell. This is a perfect material that is both lightweight and strong.
It is also abrasion proof and helps to protect the inside of the flashlight against any type of shock.
9. Zoomable lens
A zoomable lens will allow you to adjust the focus of the beam. You can either choose from a very narrow but far-reaching beam which will be a very focused beam…
Or you can lessen the focus and have a beam that is much wider but will not reach such a far distance.
This is especially helpful for when you are on the open fields hunting (need a focused, long and narrow beam) or for when you are close quarters (need a “not so focused” beam that is wider but does not reach that far of a distance).
10. Has a durable bulb
What is the use of a flashlight where the bulb gets broken only after one week’s use?
This is not something that I want happening to me. This is why it is important to note that most flashlights have bulbs that have a lifetime of at least 50 000 hours. This is equal to just under 6 years of a flashlight burning without turning it off.
#1 Solaray Pro ZX-1
This is an LED flashlight Solaray that has a max illumination of around 1200 lumens. This flashlight only comes in one color which is black and is also heavier than some of the other flashlights and weighs about 5 ounces.
This is a very good choice if you want a very bright flashlight and are willing to pay between $25 up to $35 per flashlight.
If this was not enough, here is more on what this flashlight has to offer.
- Is made from Rugged Aircraft Grade Aluminum. This is a very strong material which means that the flashlight will not break if you let it fall.
- It is waterproof. If you accidentally let it fall in the swimming pool or in the bathtub, then you do not need to worry about it malfunctioning.
- This flashlight is 6.25″ long and 1.1″ in diameter. This flashlight is quite a handful and can easily be carried in one hand.
- It also comes with 5 light modes. These modes will include Low, Medium, High, Strobe and SOS which is good for choosing the ideal brightness and to be used as a signal.
- Has a zoom lens. This is ideal for when you want a very focused but long light or a widely spread but short light. This will all depend on your surroundings and whether you want to focus on a specific object.
- Comes with 2 powerful rechargeable batteries. It has 2 Solaray 18650 Lithium-Ion Batteries that are rechargeable so you do not need to buy new batteries every time.
- You also get a dual charger. Now you can recharge 2 batteries at a time.
It is important to notice that you can also make the use of 2 AAA batteries (not included) for if you are in a hurry and cannot wait for the other 2 rechargeable batteries to fully charge
As you can see, this is a great flashlight with some very nice features that will definitely come in handy when you really need it.
The only con that I can point out is that this flashlight can be a bit heavy and is not as compact as some of the other flashlights. The high lumens makes up for this though.

#2 J5 Tactical V1-PRO
If you are after a tactical flashlight that is very compact with decent lumens, then the J5 tactical will be the most ideal. This flashlight has a brightness of 300 lumens and is not as high as that of the previous one mentioned.
What makes up for the less lumen is that it is more compact than the Solaray Pro ZX-1.
The weight is also less than 0.6 ounces which makes it almost not noticeable. The small size and low weight make it perfect for carrying in a handbag.
Almost forgot to mention that this flashlight comes in 5 colors which will include Black, Blue Aqua, Desert Ammo, Forest Camo and Hunter Orange.
Some nice features to accompany this flashlight:
- Small size. The length is 3.7 inches and the thickness is 1.02 inches. This size is very compact and is small enough to be carried in a handbag.
- Has 3 different modes. The modes will include Low, High, and Strobe. If you wish to save some battery power, then you can switch over to the low mode and if the batteries are full and you wish to use it at its brightest, then the high mode will do. The nice thing about the strobe is that it can be used for signaling for help wor if you are in danger.
- Uses a single AA battery. The AA battery is the most common battery and can be found in almost any shop. You can also use a 14500 rechargeable battery for if you want to save more money. (batteries not included).
- Long battery life. A single AA battery can keep this flashlight running for up to 60 minutes which is not that bad considering the very bright light (high amount of lumens) this flashlight can project.
- Can adjust the focus. This flashlight can shine almost the length of 2 football fields (light will be more focused) which is not bad if you consider how small and compact it is. You can also lower the focus of the flashlight which will reduce the length but will cover a wider area which is useful for close quarters.
- It is water resistant. You do not have to worry about the flashlight that will malfunction once it falls into the water.
This is the ideal flashlight to keep in your car or in your handbag and is not that expensive considering the price. It is also tough as nails and has a nice selection of very useful focus and brightness adjustments.

#3 BYBLIGHT
If you are someone looking for a very bright flashlight which might not be as compact as the J5 but is even lighter than the J5 then this useful piece of tactical equipment is for you.
The Byblight flashlight has a brightness capacity of 800 lumens which is higher than the J5 tactical and lower than the Solaray.
It also only comes in the color black and weighs 0.52 pounds, is 6.5 inches long and 1.69 inches thick. The price is also not that high.
Some very nice features to consider:
- Made out of very tough material. It is made out of aircraft grade aluminum which is very tough and extremely light as well. This is how this flashlight manages to have such high lumen capacity which does not add to the weight.
- It is water resistant. It is very important for a tactical flashlight to be water resistant because you have little control over which type of environment (includes rainy weather) you subject yourself to.
- Has 5 modes. It comes with the brightness adjustments of Low, Medium, and High which is very useful for when you want to adapt the brightness to the amount of battery power left. The Strobe and SOS are also very useful for signaling purposes and calling for aid.
- Focus adjustments. Just like some of the other flashlights, this one has the ability to adjust its focus. This is especially useful for close quarters which needs a short but wider beam and outside where you need a far-reaching beam which is more focused.
- Can reach very long distances. This flashlight has the ability to reach 656 feet in distance with the very focused adjustment.
- Very high quality and enduring bulb. This bulb has the ability to be used at optimum performance for around 50 000 hours. This will greatly affect the number of years in which you can still use this flashlight.
- Includes rechargeable battery. Imagine having to buy a flashlight and not need to worry about ever buying batteries. You will get a premium rechargeable 26650 battery that will also come with an AC charger that can be used to charge the battery.
- Batteries are long-lasting. The batteries will give your flashlight power for up to 4 hours which is more than what most flashlight can do. This is especially great for rechargeable batteries as they tend not to last that long. Now you can use this flashlight for longer periods of time without having to worry about it becoming dead.
- Small keychain flashlight included. You will get a small keychain flashlight that is also solar powered. You never need to buy batteries for this item as well. This is especially useful for when you cannot find the keyhole of your door at night.
What is included:
- 1 Flashlight.
- 1 26650 battery.
- 1 keychain flashlight.
- AC charger.
This is a phenomenal tactical flashlight that has high lumens and is not heavy at all. The extra keychain flashlight is also a great bonus which some of the other flashlights do not have.

#4 Streamlight
If you want a flashlight that is a little bit heavier and also has a very bright beam, then this one is for you. This flashlight is ideal for keeping in your car or handbag (depending on the handbag size).
It has a powerful 500-lumen brightness capacity which weighs 4.5 ounces. It is also 5.1 inches long and 1.1 inches thick.
It also comes in the colors Black, Blue and Pink (nice one for the ladies).
More features to boast about:
- Very durable material. The flashlight has an anodized finish with an aluminum housing which is very durable and lightweight.
- Comes with 2 batteries. This flashlight will also have 2 CR123A batteries which are included in this package. You can also use the Streamlight 18650 Rechargeable Li-Ion cell that is also rechargeable. When you have rechargeable batteries, then you do not constantly need to buy batteries.
- Comes with a pocket clip. This small extra feature can add much value for when you want to clip the flashlight to your belt.
- Dust and water resistant. This helps to keep the dust and water out of the flashlight which will greatly enhance the durability of the flashlight.
- Comes with 3 modes. This flashlight has mode Low, High, and Strobe. This will be extremely useful for if you want to adjust the brightness in order to save some battery power. The strobe function is especially useful for signaling and calling for help.
- Very durable bulb. The bulb has C4 LED technology incorporated which will give it a lifetime of nearly 50 000 hours which will greatly enhance the durability and lifetime of this product.
- Batteries built to last a long time. Depending on the mode that you used (high and low) the batteries will last between 30 minutes (high) up to 3 hours (low).
- Can cover a long distance. This flashlight does not have any focus capabilities but can reach a distance of 45 meters up to 165 meters which is not bad. The distance will be influenced by the mode that you are currently using.
I think this flashlight is perfect for home use and also to keep in your car. I do not think that it is ideal to keep in the handbag. That will also depend on the handbag size as stated before.

This flashlight only comes in the color black and can be bought in 1, 2 and 4 packs. It also has a weight of 2.9 ounces and a length of 4.3 inches and a width of 1.3 inches.

#6 GearLight S1200
If you liked the Solaray which was my first preference then you would like the Gearlight as well. Both of them are 1200 lumens but the major differences are the look and the weight.
The Gearlight only comes in the color black and has an angular look to it whereas the Solaray has a more rounded look.
The Gearlight also weighs 2 times more than the Solaray with a weight of 10 ounces. This is something very important to consider if weight is a huge factor for you.
This tactical flashlight is also less expensive than the Solaray and will cost you less than $20.
Some nice features to consider:
- Long battery life. This flashlight has a battery life of over 3 hours (depending on the mode). It uses 3 standard AA batteries or 1 rechargeable 18650 battery (batteries are not included). If you plan to go camping for the weekend, then this flashlight might support you for the whole trip.
- Focus adjustments. The focus can easily be adjusted to either give you a very long (1000 feet) but narrow beam or a short but wider beam. This can be very useful for when you are in the open woods or somewhere in or around your house.
- Has 5 modes. The modes that this flashlight has are Low, Medium, High, Strobe, and SOS. The low mode can be used to save power, while the high mode is useful for if you want a very strong beam. The Strobe and SOS modes are especially helpful to use as a signal.
- Water resistant. This flashlight can easily withstand rain or snow and can temporarily be kept under water for a short period. The is very useful for if you encounter unexpected weather that might damage your flashlight.
- Very durable. Because of the high-strength aluminum body, this flashlight can survive a 10 feet drop and are virtually indestructible.
- Can also break through glass. The bulb will be surrounded by a strike bezel which not only protects the bulb but can easily break glass for if you are in an emergency situation.
If you would like a cheaper version of the Solaray with the same amount of lumen and weight is not that big of an issue, then this flashlight is for you.

Features that can make a difference:
- Long lasting battery life. This flashlight comes with a 26650 rechargeable high capacity battery that has the ability to provide 6 hours of light to the flashlight. The battery also needs to be recharged for 8 hours top with a 1A adapter (not included) or a USB cable (included). Now you can use this flashlight without having to buy another battery again.

Strobe and SOS are extremely helpful for when you are lost or if your car has broken down to use as a signal.
- The light beam can reach long distances. The beam can reach a distance of nearly 1200 ft which is more than 2 football fields combined. This is especially useful for when you hunt at night so that you can spot your game from a very far distance.
- Is also water resistant. This flashlight can be kept 1 meter underwater for up to 30 minutes. This is especially good if you are prone to drop things in the bathtub, toilet or swimming pool. This also makes it safe to use while it is raining.
- Very tough. It has a very durable aluminum body that can withstand shock. This can mean the difference between a 100% functional or broken flashlight after you accidentally dropped it on the hard concrete floor.
- Has a wrist strap. For some added protection it is sometimes best not to let the flashlight fall in the first place. This is where the wrist strap will come into place. Instead of the flashlight falling on the floor, it will hang on your wrist.
If you like a flashlight that is very bright, rechargeable and that will stand the test of time then this one is for you. Just keep in mind that it might be more rugged and bulkier than most of the other flashlights.

#11 Thorfire BLF Q8
I think it is time we get to the big boys. If you like to have a flashlight that is very bright which can project a beam of up to 5000 then this one is for you.
The flashlight weighs around 14.2 ounces with a length of 5.3 inches and thickness of 2.4 inches. Keep in mind that it is a very compact flashlight regarding the high lumens.
This flashlight also only comes in the color black. It can be somewhat expensive for some people but if you want a flashlight that can pack a punch when you need to have a look at this one.
Features other than the high lumens:
- Very tough and scratch resistant. This shell of this flashlight is made out of an aerospace grade aluminum alloy that makes it lightweight and also very tough.
- Can dissipate heat. Along the head of this flashlight, you will get cooling find which helps to cool down the bulb of this flashlight. This is especially important if the flashlight has such high lumen capacity.
- Has a power indicator. On the side, it will have a power indicator that will more or less tell you how much power is left in the battery. This is especially useful if you are going on long trips and you need to save some of the power of your flashlight.
- The light beam can reach long distances. This flashlight can reach a distance of nearly 492 yards which is quite long.
- Uses button top batteries. This flashlight makes the use of four 18650 button top batteries that can last up to 1500 hours (batteries are not included).
- Very well waterproofed. It can also go underwater with a depth of 2 meters. It is great to have a flashlight knowing that you can drop it in water or that it won’t break after being exposed to rain.
- Has a mounting point. This flashlight has the capacity to also be used as a spotlight. So if you are camping and you would like to have enough light around the camp then you can mount this flashlight on a tripod for fixed illumination.
As you can see, this is a very powerful flashlight. Unfortunately, it does not have any modes and the batteries are also not included.

#12 HONRIYA 10xCree XML-T6
If you cannot afford the Thorfire, but still want a very powerful flashlight (even more powerful) then I would recommend the Honriya.
This flashlight has a massive lumen capacity of 10 000 lumens but does not have some of the features that the Thorfire has.
This flashlight comes in the colors black and gold and weighs 13 ounces with a length of 5.9 inches and thickness of 2.7 inches.
As you can see, this flashlight is very inexpensive compared to the Thorfire.
Some nice features to consider:
- Can only use one model of battery. This flashlight can only use the 18650 3.7V rechargeable lithium battery and you will need 4 of them to power this beast.
- Has 3 settings. It has the ability to switch to either Low, High or Strobe. The high setting High is much brighter than the Low setting. The Strobe setting is especially useful for when you want to signal someone from far away.
- Very strong and durable. The shell is made out of aircraft grade Aluminum which is a very strong and lightweight material. It is also abrasion proof and scratch resistant.
- Somewhat water resistant. It is also water resistant but not that much as to put it under water. Rain and water splashes are the only type of safe exposure it can have against water.
- Beam distance not that bad. The powerful beam can reach a distance of up to 50 meters which is acceptable for most people.
As you can see this flashlight is very powerful and less expensive than the Thorfire. It does not have the same quality features such as improved water resistance and a battery indicator, but it is more powerful.

V Conclusion
There are 100’s of good quality flashlights out there to buy online. Some can even go up to 10 000 lumens, but then the flashlight becomes bulky as it needs a larger LED light fur such high lumen light power.
If you still have not decided on a flashlight yet, then I would highly recommend the SOLARAY PRO ZX-1 as it has the most lumen and is also best quality and will for any type of need. Thank you for writing this great tactical flashlight review. It never occurred to me that you could get a tactical flashlight for your handbag, shooting or tactical reasons. There really is a product for everyone!
I didn’t know that 140 lumens could stop an attacker in their tracks.
I think that a strong shell and zoomable lens are important qualities for me. Thank you for bringing up those points.
I really liked the #4 Streamlight. It looks pretty lightweight and easy to manage.
I was just wondering what flashlight do you use on a day to day basis?

I do not use one on daily basis and only when I am camping. I had a Solaray once but unfortunately I have lost it.
The Streamlight is also not a bad option.

Hi Viljoen,
I like your pick of the day SOLARAY PRO ZX-1 flashlight. It could be useful in my daily work or at home. I love to have a flashlight for self- defense.
Your best tactical flashlight is informative, it does help people like me who do not even know which one is the best flashlights. Thank you.
This is great!

This is an extremely detailed post, with more than enough information to help choose which flashlight is best. I personally love the Klarus XT11GT. Yes, it is a bit expensive, but bloody heck! It’s waterproof, rechargeable, comes with various ways to recharge AND it has a battery life indicator, so we know exactly how long we have left before we’re left in complete darkness. Fantastic post, thank you 🙂

The Klarus can be quite expensive but is is a beast when you consider the quality.

Hi There!
I found your review very useful in selecting a new flashlight. I think I’m going to look a little further into the Thorfire and HONRIYA models that you conclude your review with!
Do you have any direct experience with either of these models? I know they offer the highest lumens, but I think I’d air on the side of the Thorfire, mainly because of the added waterproofing.
Thanks for the useful review!

If you want a high lumen flashlight that is also tightly waterproof, then I would recommend the Klarus XT11GT.
