Tactical Boots Buying Guide
If you are already familiar with tactical boots and you know your stuff, then you might want to skip this guide if you want to. (If you want to skip this buying guide, then click this link to go to the first product).
If you are not familiar with tactical boots and you would like to know what to look for when choosing the right pair of boots from the start, then you might want to go through this guide with me.
Let us start off with some of the materials being used to make these boots.
1. Materials used
The materials used to make up about nearly 100% of the boot and if you do not use good quality materials, then the boot will also not be of good quality.
The 2 most common types of materials used are leather and nylon. Other materials such as synthetic materials can also be used, but will not have the same quality as leather. The only positive thing about some synthetic materials is that it is much lighter than leather.
I do not think that I need to explain to you what leather is but, just in case, I will say that it is actually cattle skin. Almost any type of animal skin can be used to make leather but the quality will heavily depend on the thickness and softness of the skin.
The best way to look after your boots that are made out of leather is by nourishing it with any type of fatty substance. The fat will then be sucked up by the leather.
Nylon, on the other hand, is also very durable. You also get different types materials that are made out of Nylon which will basically represent the thickness of the thread that was being used to make the nylon.
For instance, you will get the 600D and 1000D nylon. The “D” denier which represents the weight of the thread which is also an indicator of the thickness.
The higher the number before the “D” the thicker the thread and the stronger the material.
2. Available Colors
The colors do not play a role in the quality of the boot but will play a role in the aesthetic department. There is a wide range of colors available such as Black, Coyote, Tan, Reaper Camo, Desert Sand, Desert Tan, Sage, Sage Green etc.
3. Weight
The weight of the boots will not play a direct role in the quality but can make it harder or easier to wear. I think that we all can agree that most of us will choose a boot that is lighter.
There is nothing worse than carrying a heavy piece of leather around your foot especially when you have to walk long distances with it.
The size and sole of the boot will also contribute to the overall weight.
The weight will range from 1.6 up to 2.7 pounds.
4. Quality of the stitching
It does not make sense to use a very high-quality material such as leather to make these boots, but you cannot keep all of the pieces together by messing up with the stitching.
The quality of the stitching will depend on the thickness of the thread, the number of layers of stitching and also where the stitches are being used.
5. The price tag associated with the product
The price is something that I always consider when reviewing a product. The factors that will influence the price will have to be the type of material used, size and also the quality of the stitching.
If you are short on a budget and you want the least expensive boot of the lot, then I would highly recommend the Ryno Gear boot which is also the least expensive option of them all.
Some of the boots will even cost you more than $100 per pair.
6. Do the boots have a gusseted tongue?
This is going to be the thick spongy part of the show that will press just above the bridge of your foot near the front part of your ankle.
The gusseted tongue will play 2 roles which will include comfort and it will also keep smaller particles out of your shoe such as small stones insects.
7. Does it have slip resistance?
There is nothing worse than slipping on a slippery surface such as an oil puddle or a wet floor. I also do not think that you can call a boot a “tactical boot” if it does not have least some sort of slip resistance to it.
It is important to note that a rubber sole itself does provide some sort of slip resistance but the number one factor that can play a significant role is the shoe tread.
Some patterns are just better than others when it comes to slipping resistance.
8. Zipper on the side
A large majority of the boots that are in this article also have at least one zipper on the side. This is important for when you want to quickly take your boots off.
Especially those boots that have a long shaft which can be very hard to take off especially when your feet are swollen from walking long distances (most military men can agree with me on this one). Then I do not even want to get started with the shoelaces.
9. Does it offer some sort of ventilation?
This can make a huge difference on how wet the inside of your boots will become especially when you have sweaty feet. Shoes that are very hot is also not that comfortable.
I also do not want to get started with athletes feet and some of the other bacteria that comes with it. Most of the shoes in this article has some sort of mesh on the sides or small holes that can help with ventilation.
Some shoes also have antibacterial material on the inside that can counter the nasty effects that will lead to athlete’s feet.
If you want a boot that has some of that antimicrobial properties, then I would recommend the Original S.W.A.T. tactical boots which are also great.
The 5.11 ATAC tactical boot is also a great choice which provides antimicrobial properties.
10. Some form of water resistance
If your boots are mainly made out of leather, then it will also provide some form of water resistance. The leather itself is not like cotton that will suck up as much water as it can when in contact with it.
Water will generally flow off the leather instead of being sucked up which will provide some sort of water resistance.
11. Shock absorbent qualities
If a boot does not have these qualities, then it will be very hard on your heels and the bridge of your foot. Most of the soles and inlays have an ability to absorb some of the energy when the sole of the boot makes contact with the floor.
12. How much comfort does it provide?
Last but definitely not least, we will look at comfort and why it is important.
There is nothing worse than sore feet after a long day’s work. If you have boots that do not help with comfort then you are better off walking barefooted.
There are 2 boots specifically that makes extra sure provide more comfort than most of the boots out there. The 2 boots that I am mentioning will be the Under Armor and the Reebok Work tactical boots.
The Under Armour has UA ClutchFit technology that helps to support your ankle in order to improve your comfort levels.
The Reebok Work tactical boot has both an XTR brand extra wide composite toe cap that gives better comfort to your toes and a Foot Force F2A polyurethane cushion that provides comfort for your heel.
#1 Smith & Wesson Men’s Breach 2.0
If you are a huge fan of Smith & Wesson and you would like to have a pair of boots that are made from this brand then you need to take a look at these pair of boots.
When you combine the price, look, and quality of a boot, then I would say that the Smith & Wesson Men’s Breach 2.0 is very good value for money.
This boot also comes in the colors Black and Coyote.
The sizes will range from 5D(M) US up to 14D (M) US. Or it can reach from 7W up to 14W. Also because of the sizes, the weight will also differ from 2 to 2.5 pounds.
More features to mention:
- High durable material. The boot is mainly made out of leather and nylon which are some of the most durable materials out there when it comes to boots.
- Has a gusseted tongue. It also has a gusseted tongue to keep any foreign material out of your boot. There is nothing worse than a small stone that has positioned itself under your foot. This gusseted tongue will also provide some comfort.
- Very light midsole. It also has a very light midsole that gives better comfort and support. This lightweight sole will also greatly contribute to the overall weight of this boot.
- The boot also has a steel shank. It also has a steel shank that works wonders for support. These shanks do a great job at diminishing the load incurred by the wearer’s feet over the course of an ascent.
- Sole that is slip resistant. The rubber outsole is also engineered in such a way that makes this boot very slip resistant. There are a few things worse than slipping on a wet rocky outcrop.
- Also has a side zipper. On the inside of the boot, you will find a high quality and durable zipper that can be used to quickly take the boot off.
Other than this, I think it is a great boot from Smith & Wesson that must be mentioned in this article.
What we liked
- Best value for the money.
- Can easily be taken off.
- Very slip resistant.
What We Didn’t Like
- Ankle shaft might be too high for some people.

#2 Ryno Gear (Least Expensive)
If you want a high quality boot that does not have a long shaft and also contains a zipper with a very reasonable price tag, then I would recommend the Ryno Gear tactical boots.
So far these pair of boots is also the least expensive compared to all of the other pair of boots reviewed in this article.
This boot also only comes in the color tan.
The sizes of this boot also range from size 6 up to 14 with a weight of 1.6 to 2 pounds.
Other features worth mentioning:
- Good grade material. This boot uses a combination of leather and ballistic nylon which will not only contribute to toughness/durability but also comfort as well.
- Good quality stitching. You will notice that this boot is double stitched which will also contribute to the durability. What is it going to help if you have the best materials available but you cannot keep everything together?
- No worry about foreign objects in your boots. These boots have a gusseted tongue and also some padding along the collar which will situate above your ankle. This will reduce the chances of small foreign objects such as small rocks and grass seeds from falling inside of your boot.
- Slip-resistant sole. This pair will also come with a slip-resistant rubber sole that will provide better grip. This is very important if you work on surfaces that have oil spills and that is also very slippery.
- Has shock-absorbent insoles. These insoles will provide some shock-absorbent qualities to your boots. They can also be removed if the boot becomes too tight on your feet.
- Has zipper on the side. Last but not least, these boots also come with a zipper on the side. This will enable you to quickly take the boot off or on when you do not have time for the laces.
This is going to be one of my favorite pair of boots in this article and is also highly recommended. They are also not that expensive considering what you get.
What we liked
- Least expensive of all the other boots.
- Has zipper on the side.
- Slip resistant.
What We Didn’t Like
- Does not have good quality ventilation.

#3 Under Armour Men’s Valsetz RTS
If you would like a top quality boot that is both lightweight and durable then you need to take a look at the Under Armor tactical boots.
Many people are huge Under Armour fans especially ex-military personnel. I have seen and met many ex Afghanistan US soldiers wearing this brand. So is the quality really that good or is it just a thing about the brand that drives these people mad?
The sizes range from 8 D(M) US to 14 D(M) US. The weight is not consistent but can range from 1.6 up to 2 pounds.
There are currently 4 colors available:
- Black
- Coyote Brown
- Reaper Camo
- Desert Sand
More on some of the features:
- Type of material. This show is made out of synthetic leather which might be stronger and lighter than normal leather. The exact combination of materials from which this shoe is made out of is not known.
- Very lightweight. The boot is made out of synthetic leather which makes it lighter than normal leather. This makes it easy to jog in these boots if you want to.
- Rubber sole. The sole of this boot is made out of rubber which gives these boots better grip that contributes to some of the anti-slip properties.
- Is also breathable. This boot has a breathable mesh on both sides. This will enable these boots to “breathe” that will allow your feet to cool down and reduce the chances of developing athlete’s feet.
- UA ClutchFit technology. The shaft is also just high enough to reach your ankle so that it does not hinder ankle movement. It also uses UA ClutchFit technology that carefully wraps your ankle for more support and comfort.
- Sole that provides great comfort. The sole also contains Micro G® foam that gives you that “takeoff” feeling when you take a step.
If you would like to have a pair of boots that will give you the best comfort possible, then I would recommend the Under Armor boots.

#4 5.11 ATAC
If you are a huge fan of 5.11 Tactical and you would also like to have a pair of boots from this brand then I would highly recommend the 5.11 ATAC tactical boots.
These boots are of very high quality and also comes in 2 colors which are Coyote Brown and Black.
These pair of boots are also in the same price range as the Under Armor boots but can be a little bit less expensive when you bring this sizes into consideration.
The sizes range from 4 D(M) US up to 15 D(M) US. The weight can range from 2 to 2.5 pounds depending on the size.
More on some of the features:
- Designed with a zipper. It also contains a zipper on the side that enables you to put on or take the shoe off at a faster rate.
- Made out of endurable material. The materials used to make this boot include leather and rugged nylon. One problem I had was that the boots did not have any mesh on the sides to help with ventilation.
- Much more shock resistant. This boot also has a “5.11 Shock Mitigation System” that makes the boot more shock resistant.
- The boot is also antibacterial. The material inside of the boot is also antibacterial which might help against fungi that cause athlete’s foot.
The only 2 problems that I had with these boots are that the sole is made from synthetic material which means that it might not be 100% rubber.
The second problem was that it does not have any type of mesh on the side that will help with ventilation. At least it has antibacterial material on the inside that will counter the problems that moisture will bring.
What we liked
- Can be quickly taken off.
- Is also antibacterial.

#5 Rocky Men’s C4T
If you would like to have a tactical boot that has a long shaft that has a more militaristic appeal to it, then I would highly recommend the Rocky Men’s C4T tactical boot.
This boot also comes in 3 colors which include Desert Tan, Sage, and Sage Green.

- Lightweight sole. It has a lightweight EVA rubber sole that is strong and non-slippery. This is especially helpful if you tend to slip on a wet floor.
- Offers some ventilation. These boots do however provide at least a little of ventilation. There are small holes on the lower sides of the boot that can help with airflow.
- Has NATO hooks. These hooks are used to pull the laces through. The only nice thing about these hooks is that they make it easier to pull the laces through.
- Somewhat water resistant. It is also water-resistant and a fast-drying military boot that can also be very beneficial if you do not have the time to walk around water puddles.
- Has a long shaft. This boot has the typical long shaft that comes with most military style boots. These long shafts make it easier to avoid any foreign material falling into the boot.
If you have to take all of the features into consideration, I believe that this is a well-made boot. It has a high shaft and is also not that expensive.
The only problem that I had was that it does not offer a lot of ventilation.
What we liked
- Has a long shaft.
- Not that expensive.
- Non-slippery sole.
What We Didn’t Like
- Does not provide a lot of ventilation.

If you would like to have a boot similar to the Rocky men’s but one that also includes a zipper on the side, then I would highly recommend the Bates tactical boot.

When it comes to the color of tactical boots, I like to have options. There are basically 4 colors available which will include the following:
- Generation 2.0 Black
- Generation 2.0 Tan
- Black
- Tan
You will notice there is a small difference in the contrast of the color between the tan and generation 2.0 tan.
More features to delve into:
- Somewhat good quality material. The boot itself is made out of leather while the mesh is made out of fabric. The upper part of the boot will contain mesh which will make it more “breathable”. This is a perfect shoe for when you are on a budget and is also good quality with a long list of valuable features.

I had no idea military boots had become so varied. In 1974 when I joined the service there was one. Take it or leave it. Fortunately, the one style we had was pretty good. It lasted me at least 20 years after I left the service. It was hard to toss them.
It got to the point where there were no shops around me that repaired them anymore. Everything has become throwaways.
I’m impressed, you really know your tactical boots. The tongue was one part of the combat boots I had an issue with back then. It was never comfortable although it was fine for its main benefit of keeping the laces from digging into your skin.
I used my combat boots to climb the Zugspitze in Germany up to the Eagles Nest where Hitler often hid out during the war.
Wow, antimicrobial properties and antibacterial material in a boot. What will they think of next? Shock absorbent boots? I can almost hear a ‘back in my day we didn’t have such things’ kind of speech coming from me. I’ll leave it alone. The old boots got comfortable only after you broke them in. Then they were awesome.
Your article on boots is certainly thorough and professional looking.

Thanks Paul
It really does take some time to break in those boots. If you take care of your boots, they can almost last a lifetime.

Hi Viljoen!
Great article on tactical boots! I found your Buyer’s Guide very useful and the fact that you include a table of every boot you review to make side-by-side comparisons quick and effortless!
I also appreciate that you highlight the least expensive option so that it’s easy to find a decent boot at a reasonable price.
And it’s imperative to recognize the importance of good ventilation, as you mention several times in your article. I’ve experienced the early stages of trench foot before on a long hiking trip, and it’s not something I’d like to repeat!
Do you have any direct experience with any of these boots?
Again, thanks for all the info!

Hi Tucker
I have some experience with Under Armor and a boot similar that listed in this review. The boot that I refer too is also very expensive, so that is why I recommend the Smith & Wesson.

Very good and detail sharing about tactical boots. I personally like to go for the lightweight one as per guide #3. I totally agree that carrying a heavy piece of leather on your foot may make your day worse. I like the comparison table that you put out there too. I can see that there are some cheaper range with good rating/review too. So for those who are looking for a not too expensive, this would be a good place to start off as well.
